Environment is the number one public concern in Thailand

Despite the continued challenges of Covid-19, Thais consider the environment as the number one public concern in a recent nationwide survey. Asked to choose their “Top 5 Public Concerns”, environment was chosen by 38% of those surveyed, followed by the economy, unemployment, rising prices, corruption, crime and moral standards.

Environment was a greater concern for older Thais, women and those living in Greater Bangkok, while women and younger Thais were more concerned about unemployment, rising prices and the economy. 57% of those surveyed believe that the environment has a very big impact on their quality of life and 47% believe that conditions will get worse in the next 5 years.

The survey was conducted by Marketbuzzz, in collaboration with Thammasat University School of Global Studies (SGS), in April 2021 before the Songkran holiday with a nationally representative sample of 1,000 people. The Marketbuzzz team worked with graduate students from SGS (in one of my classes there) to ensure the survey reflected the full range of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is great to see that the results strongly reflect the most important SDGs, and especially ‘Responsible Consumption’, ‘Climate Action’, ‘Decent Work and Economic Growth’, and ‘Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions’ stand out from others as a key focus of people across Thailand.

The survey also explored the most pressing environmental issues in Thailand, and the role of government, industry and individual action to address these issues, and these findings will be published in future blog posts.

Thanks to Marketbuzzz for their collaboration with SGS and you can find more about their work here. SGS has a full press release on the collaboration here.
