Review of You Talkin’ To Me: Rhetoric from Aristotle to Obama by Sam Leith

This book is an introduction to the art of rhetoric, using a range of examples to illustrate the theory and practice of rhetoric first formulated by Aristotle. The book, of course, covers ethos, logos and pathos and Aristotle’s views on the art and science of rhetoric before moving through Roman history and on to more recent events and examples.

In explaining the use of rhetorical devices by Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler, Martin Luther King and Barack Obama, the author makes the topic and the many strange Greek names more accessible and understandable. If you want a clear and readable introduction to a very dry topic, this may be the book for you.
